The year 2020 has seen a growing trend in reaching out for fruits and foods that are locally grown and familiar to our communities. Hyperlocal produce has an edge over everything else, since it is the food that is native to the region and has been traditionally known for its nutritive properties. These are seasonal foods and thus, are exclusively available during a particular time period. ‘Jaam’ is one such fruit, which has great nutritional benefits but is not very popular. Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar took to Instagram to post trivia about this wonder fruit. Take a look at her post:

“Keep calm and eat jaam – it’s spring time and if you look outside, you will see this beauty in bloom. It’s the native jaam or rose apple as some people call it. It will turn into a tasty, crunchy, pinkish fruit that is so powerful in its nutrients that it will ensure that you will stay in the pink of health, now and forever,” wrote Rujuta Diwekar on Instagram. She is right on point with her description, as the ‘Jaam’ or ‘Rose Apple’ is quite a healthy fruit to consume during season change.

Also known as ‘Safed Jamun’ in some parts of the country, the fruit is not as well-known as its cousin, ‘Kala Jamun’. Earlier, it was only found in tropical areas such as the West Indies, the Malay islands and the Andaman and Nicobar islands, but now, it is widely cultivated among other tropical regions. The fruit is now very popular in the fruit markets of Kolkata, where it is found in abundance.

Safed Jamun has a waxy texture and is primarily a summer fruit. It is also known as ‘Wax apple’ for the same reason. Its slightly tangy taste makes it the perfect ingredient for home-made vinegar. It also smells and tastes similar to the scent of rose petals, which is the reason why it is sometimes referred to as ‘Rose Apple’. It has a pinkish hue on the outside, and at times, has a completely red exterior too. The high water content in ‘Jaam’ can help the body stay hydrated.
