Isn’t the aroma of a freshly brewed coffee a pure bliss? If it is a bliss for you too, then this article is just for you! Coffee has always been known for providing us with a boost of instant energy and promoting weight loss (especially black coffee). A new report says, it may also have a positive effect on digestion and gut-health. According to the report from the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC), consumption of coffee indicates a potential protective effect against digestive disorder, gallstone disease and pancreatitis. The report, titled ‘Coffee and its effect on digestion’, was authored by Professor Carlo La Vecchia, at the Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, University of Milan, Italy.

“The effect of coffee on digestion is an evolving area of research. Data indicates benefits against common digestive complaints such as constipation, as well as a potential reduction in the risk of more serious conditions like chronic liver diseases, from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), gallstones and related pancreatitis,” Vecchia commented.

While the mechanism of how coffee can protect against gallstone disease is yet to be known, it has been observed that the risks of the disease declines with increase in daily coffee consumption.

The study also highlights coffee’s effect on the process of digestion, including supporting gut microflora and promoting gut motility. It said that coffee can help in stimulate gut motility. On that note, gut motility is a term given to the stretching and contractions of the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

This report also provides insight into areas where further research is needed for better understanding of the mechanisms and effects.
