If you are a fan of Mexican food, tortillas must be making a regular occurrence on your plate. Although, there are endless options from Mexican cuisine we can try, tortillas, somehow, inched its way to being the most common Mexican food enjoyed in India. So much so, tortillas are now also made at our homes. Tortilla wraps are just like our Indian roti, only thinner in width and fluffier in texture. These flatbreads make for the perfect light wraps that can enclose any filling of your choice, not necessarily Mexican.

You can make cheesy quesadillas, veggie-filled tacos, spicy tortillas, or just make Indian-style masala roll – tortilla wraps can be used to make just about anything. The fact that they are easily available in Indian grocery stores, helped raised its stock in our diet. However, during the lockdown, when you want to avoid going to market just to buy tortilla wraps, make them at home! Yes, you can make store-like tortilla wraps at home just as easily as you make roti. Also, you can make these with healthier whole wheat flour too. Since, everyone is trying out different foods from different cuisines during home quarantine, you too can surprise your family with a variety of unique meals made with homemade tortilla wraps.

Tortilla wraps can be used to make a number of dishes. 

How To Make Homemade Tortilla Wraps:

(The recipe will yield 4-5 tortilla wraps)

Ingredients –

1 cup flour

1 tsp baking powder

2 tbsp oil (preferably olive oil)

Salt to taste

1 cup hot water

Method –

Step 1 – Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add oil and knead lightly so that all the dry ingredients are well coated with oil.

Step 2 – With hot water, knead the mixture into a soft dough.

Step 4 – Sprinkle some dry flour on a plate. Place the dough on it and roll it over the flour once.

Step  5 – Divide the dough into small balls (slightly smaller than balls used to make chapatti).

Step 6 – Transfer the dough balls to a bowl and cover it with elastic wrap or kitchen towel. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.

Step 7 – With a rolling pin, roll each dough ball into a thin roti (almost translucent) and cook on both the sides in a non-stick pan for few seconds, till brown spots start forming. Remember, not to overcook it.

Store the tortilla wraps in a chapatti box lined with kitchen towel so that they remain soft and airy. Use the wraps to make some fascinating tortilla dishes that you and your family will love.
